Leavenworth Marathon

The Leavenworth Marathon is held annually in Leavenworth, Washington, a town known for its transformation in the 1960s into a Bavarian-themed village set against the backdrop of the North Cascade Mountains. Originally a Native American area, later a hub for mining and the railroad, Leavenworth reinvented itself as a tourist destination modeled after a Bavarian alpine village, and today it is recognized as Washington’s second most popular tourist spot.
The marathon route is distinguished by its striking natural scenery and unique alpine setting. The course starts near the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area and leads runners on a 9-mile stretch through Icicle Canyon, surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes. Participants travel on a mix of paved roads, dirt paths, and wooded trails, often encountering views of the Wenatchee River and Icicle Creek, where salmon spawning is sometimes visible. The route continues north via East Leavenworth Road toward the Wenatchee River Bridge, crossing into the themed village and following scenic riverfront parks and trails before looping back for a second lap and finishing at the Enchantment Park Event Center. The total elevation ranges from 1,099 to 2,553 feet, with a net elevation loss and a total gain of 572 feet, making the course one of the fastest in the United States and particularly notable in Washington for its potential to set personal records.
Culturally, the marathon is often held during the town’s busy Oktoberfest season, which features music, parades, and Bavarian-themed festivities, contributing to a distinctive atmosphere for runners and visitors. The town’s Germanic architecture, mountain setting, and festive environment create a race experience that stands apart from urban marathons.
Key unique features include:
– The combination of Bavarian village culture with the Pacific Northwest’s dramatic mountain environment.
– A course that offers a mix of asphalt and dirt trails, river views, and occasional wildlife sightings.
– The event’s timing with local festivals, enhancing both the challenge and the cultural immersion for participants.
Leavenworth Marathon restricts the full course to a six-hour time limit for marathoners. Walkers are welcome in the half marathon, which covers much of the same route, including a passage through the village’s main street and riverfront parks.
The event is regularly recognized for its fast course, scenic value, and the unique cultural context provided by the setting in Leavenworth.
