Napa Valley Marathon

Calistoga, United States of America 1 Mar, 2026

The Napa Valley Marathon is an annual running event held in California’s Napa Valley, typically in early March. The race starts in the town of Calistoga and follows the Silverado Trail southward, concluding at Vintage High School in the northern part of Napa. The point-to-point course runs through a rural landscape featuring vineyards, groves of flowering fruit trees, and views of surrounding mountains, with much of the route lined by world-renowned wineries and fields of mustard flowers.

The course has a net elevation drop of approximately 303 feet, beginning at about 400 feet above sea level and finishing at around 60 feet. Despite this overall downhill profile, runners encounter several rolling hills, especially between miles 15 and 20, followed by relatively flat terrain in the final five miles. The rural setting is largely uninterrupted except for the last half-mile, which enters more urban surroundings near the finish.

With an official cutoff time of six hours, participants must maintain roughly a 13:44-per-mile pace to be considered official finishers. The event is USATF certified and serves as a Boston Marathon qualifying race. The field typically includes up to 1,500 marathon runners, in addition to participants in the accompanying half marathon and 5K event.

Strollers are not permitted in the marathon or half marathon for safety reasons, and the marathon is restricted to runners aged 18 and above. Spectators are generally positioned along the course and at the finish area, with some limited parking and shuttle arrangements. The route is closed to through traffic except for local residents, emergency vehicles, and winery employees with escort.

Overall, the marathon is regarded as moderately challenging: its net downhill and generally fast course are offset by hillier segments that require strategic pacing, especially for less experienced marathoners or those seeking personal records. The scenery and atmosphere are frequently cited as notable aspects of the event.
