Flying Pig Marathon

The Flying Pig Marathon is a road race held annually in Cincinnati, Ohio, covering 26.2 miles and including portions of the neighboring cities of Covington and Newport in Kentucky, as well as the communities of Mariemont, Fairfax, and Columbia Township. The event typically takes place in early May and features additional race formats such as a half marathon and relay, with a series of weekend activities and an expo held prior to race day.
The course begins near the banks of the Ohio River, next to prominent local landmarks such as Great American Ballpark and Paul Brown Stadium. Runners cross the Ohio River twice in the first miles, traversing multiple bridges between Cincinnati and Kentucky. The route proceeds in a loop northeast before returning alongside the Ohio River to the finish area, which is located between the two stadiums. The terrain is considered challenging, with most of the elevation gain occurring between miles 6 and 9, featuring a climb of approximately 300 feet. The hills on the bridges in the opening miles also contribute to early elevation demands. After the main climb, the course transitions into rolling hills that continue until around mile 19, followed by generally flatter terrain toward the finish, though rolling sections persist.
There is a strict course time limit enforcing a continuous pace of 16 minutes per mile; participants failing to maintain this pace may be moved to sidewalks and will not be guaranteed runner services. The minimum age for participation in the full marathon is 18. Runners who do not reach a set cutoff point by a designated time are transported ahead on the course for safety and logistical reasons.
Notable aspects include the course’s route through several neighborhoods, providing a varied urban and suburban setting, and frequent on-course aid stations. The event is recognized for its challenging hills, especially in the first half, and for its integration of the region’s riverfront geography, which requires significant elevation changes early in the race. The event draws large crowds of spectators in downtown areas during the start and finish sections.
