San Francisco Marathon

The San Francisco Marathon is an annual long-distance running event held in San Francisco, California, typically starting from Mission Street & The Embarcadero and featuring a 26.2-mile course with a 6-hour time limit. Runners begin early in the morning, around 5:15 a.m., and traverse a route certified by USATF that passes through several of the city’s most notable neighborhoods and landmarks.
The course leads participants past Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina Green, and Crissy Field before reaching the Golden Gate Bridge, which they cross and descend toward Sausalito, providing scenic views across the bay. After reaching Cavallo Point, runners return to San Francisco through the Presidio, the Richmond District, and Golden Gate Park, then along Haight Street and through the Mission District. The route continues along Mission Bay and past major sports venues such as the homes of the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants before finishing under the Bay Bridge.
In addition to the full marathon, the event weekend offers other race formats including a half marathon, 10K, and 5K, as well as combination challenges for runners who wish to participate in multiple races. Course support features aid stations with water and electrolyte drinks, pacers for various finish time goals, and medical tents staffed with emergency personnel at key locations along the course.
Special features of the event include running across the Golden Gate Bridge, multiple aid stations, well-organized pacers, and the opportunity to experience diverse neighborhoods and iconic city views throughout the race. The marathon serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier and typically draws large crowds, resulting in city-wide street closures and transit reroutes during race day.
