Seattle Marathon

The Seattle Marathon is an annual road race held in Seattle, Washington, typically during late fall. The full marathon covers a distance of 26.2 miles and features a course that loops through various neighborhoods and notable locations in the city.
The setting of the marathon includes urban streets, parkways, and notable Seattle landmarks such as the University of Washington campus, Green Lake, Gas Works Park, and the Ship Canal Bridge. Key spectator locations include Arboretum Drumheller Fountain, Gas Works Park, and areas near Woodland Park Zoo. Weather conditions for the marathon are characteristically cool and damp, with temperatures often in the low to mid-40s Fahrenheit and a high likelihood of rain, reflecting Seattle’s late fall climate.
The course is recognized for its challenging, rolling terrain. The elevation profile has a maximum of 352 feet (107 meters) and a minimum of 14 feet (4 meters), with a total elevation gain of 942 feet (287 meters) and a loss of 1029 feet (313 meters). These rolling hills can increase the difficulty for runners, although the race does not feature extreme elevation changes compared to some other marathons. The event is classified as having a moderate difficulty due to its course profile and typical weather conditions.
In terms of performance, the marathon’s course is ranked as the 343rd fastest in the United States and the 23rd fastest in Washington State, with a course score of 97.83, indicating that it is not among the fastest for achieving personal records or Boston Marathon qualifying times. The proportion of finishers qualifying for the Boston Marathon is relatively low compared to other races of similar size.
Support on the course includes regular water stations that provide water, electrolyte drinks (such as Nuun Sport or Nuun Endurance), and select stations also supply energy gels. Split times are recorded at intervals along the marathon and half marathon routes. No shower facilities are offered at the event site.
The Seattle Marathon also features affiliated events such as a half marathon, 5K and 10K races, and a kids’ fun run, which are often held during different times of the year.
