St. George Marathon

The St. George Marathon is an annual marathon held in St. George, Utah, typically scheduled on the first Saturday in October. The event first took place in 1977 and has established itself as one of the largest marathons in the United States, with participant caps typically allowing up to 5,500 runners in the marathon, 2,500 in the half marathon, and 600 in the 5K race.
The marathon course starts near the Pine Valley Mountains at an elevation of approximately 5,240 feet (1,600 m) and descends about 2,600 feet (790 m) to finish at Vernon Worthen Park in St. George, at 2,680 feet (820 m). The route features significant natural scenery, passing through areas with white, pink, and red sandstone as well as black basalt formations, especially noted in Snow Canyon State Park. The course is entirely point-to-point, emphasizing a net downhill profile that is often cited as a distinctive feature.
The official race start time is 7:00 AM, the same for both runners and wheelchair athletes. A time limit is imposed; participants must reach the 23.1-mile checkpoint at Snow Canyon Parkway and Utah State Route 18 within 6 hours and 15 minutes after starting. Temperature at the starting line is often between 38 and 44 °F (3 to 7 °C), with finishing temperatures ranging from 65 to 85 °F (18 to 29 °C).
Besides the full marathon, the event includes a half marathon, a 5K, a one-mile kids run, a 200-meter kids run, and adaptive races over similar distances. Registration is open to all genders and nationalities, but it closes once participant caps are reached or on the registration deadline, usually August 31.
Road closures along the route are extensive during the race, with specific spectator points at key mile markers and designated access routes for supporters. Traffic in town and on surrounding highways is significantly affected for the duration of the event.
The St. George Marathon’s notable features include its scenic desert-mountain course, the considerable net elevation drop, and wide community and spectator support throughout the route.
