Sugarloaf Marathon

Carrabassett Valley, United States of America 10 May, 2026

The Sugarloaf Marathon is a long-distance running event held annually in the mountains of Western Maine, following a point-to-point course along Maine Scenic Highway Route 27. The course begins in the town of Eustis, near the Cathedral Pines Campground, traverses through the Carrabassett Valley, and finishes in Kingfield next to a local landmark. The setting features mountainous terrain and scenic views, particularly of the Bigelow Mountain range and the Carrabassett River.

The course is notable for its topography: the first 5 miles are flat, miles 5€“10 include rolling hills with a sustained two-mile climb around mile 8, and the remaining 16 miles are predominantly downhill. This net downhill layout makes the marathon one of the fastest in the United States, with a high percentage of participants qualifying for the Boston Marathon. However, the significant downhill section can also pose challenges to runners unaccustomed to sustained descents.

The event typically occurs in May, often taking place amid cool spring temperatures, and is recognized by the United States Track and Field Association as a sanctioned race. The cut-off time for completing the marathon is set at 7 hours, making it accessible to a variety of paces. In addition to the full marathon, a 15-kilometer race is also offered during the event weekend.

Support for runners includes bib and packet pickup at the Sugarloaf Base Lodge and organization by local race officials. The Sugarloaf Marathon is regarded for its consistent organization and enthusiastic regional support, without major urban amenities but with a strong focus on the natural environment and local community involvement.
