Black Mountain, United States of America · Saturday 3 April 2027
This race suits experienced trail runners and road marathoners who have trained on hilly terrain and won't be discouraged by sustained climbing. You need to be comfortable with elevation work and have built your aerobic base over several months. It's not a personal record course, so runners chasing fast times should look elsewhere. Instead, this is for people who enjoy the technical and mental challenge of mountain running, who find satisfaction in grinding uphill and managing the descent carefully. Spring training in April also means you should be prepared for variable weather at elevation, which can shift quickly in mountain regions. You'll face relentless climbing throughout the race, with the course gaining nearly 900 meters from start to finish while oscillating between 726 and 1594 meters of elevation. This means you won't experience many genuine downhill sections where you can recover and build momentum. The road surface keeps you from the footwork complexity of true trails, but the gradient will still demand careful pacing and disciplined fueling. Most runners find the middle miles particularly tough, when accumulated fatigue combines with continued climbing. Your legs will feel heavy on the uphills, and your quads will take a beating on the descents, so you need to train specifically for both sensations. Finishing strong requires respecting the mountain's demands from the first kilometer rather than hoping to find energy late in the race.
