Alamogordo, United States of America · Saturday 10 October 2026
This race works well for runners who want a fast, straightforward marathon without major elevation challenges. The flat to gently rolling terrain and modest altitude of around 1,230 meters makes it suitable for those chasing a personal best or building confidence in marathon distance. It's the kind of course that rewards consistent pacing and good aerobic fitness rather than hill-climbing strength. That said, the October timing and desert location mean you'll be dealing with heat and sun exposure, so this is better suited to runners who've trained in warm conditions or who handle temperature well. Coastal or cool-climate runners might find the environment harder than the actual course profile suggests. What makes this marathon potentially difficult has nothing to do with the terrain itself. Alamogordo sits in the New Mexico desert, which means the landscape is exposed and there's little shade once you're out on the road. The sun will be intense even in October, and you'll need a solid fueling and hydration strategy going in. The air is dry at that elevation, which compounds dehydration risk. The flatness of the course is deceptive in this context. Because there's no terrain to slow you down and no natural rhythm breaks from climbing, it's easy to go out too hard chasing time, then suffer badly in the second half. The course is fast on paper, but only if you respect the environmental conditions and run smart.
