The marathon event known as the 'Original Las Vegas Marathon' has origins dating back to 1967, initially organized as the World Masters Championship by Hank Greenspun, the editor of the Las Vegas Sun. The race grew significantly under Al Boka, who became race director in 1981, eventually attracting up to 10,000 runners before its ownership changed in 2005 and its format transitioned to the Rock €˜n' Roll Running Series until 2020. Historically, the event was notable for its desert route.
